The paintings, at St Peter and St Pauls Church in Pickering, date back to around 1470, and have suffered damage and deterioration over the centuries. The project, running under the banner of A Church for Today, a Legacy for Tomorrow, will not only see work done to the wall paintings, but also the repair and redevelopment of the church, with the aim of improving facilities and bringing it up to date to meet the needs of both the regular congregation and the wider community. The wall paintings are the most complete set in the country so are of major historical value. A spokesperson for St Peter and St Pauls Church, said: It has been known for some time that they are in need of cleaning and conservation, work which was last done in the 1960s. However, before this can be done, some repairs need to be carried out, the most significant of which is to make the building watertight by replacing the roofs on the Chancel, South Transept and South Aisle.
