Turner Sims has announced a sparkling new September to December 2026 programme with tickets on sale now from turnersims.co.uk The ambitious series spans classical, jazz, folk, global music, film, literature and family events. Across the season, audiences can expect intimate encounters with internationally celebrated performers, bold theatrical collaborations, new voices in jazz, spellbinding folk, and music that moves across borders, traditions and generations. Highlights include striking new theatre work The Death of Gesualdo, featuring an internationally celebrated vocal group, six actors and ground-breaking puppetry and a stunning collaboration between two towering artists Grammy Award-winner Kayhan Kalhor and renowned Turkish bağlama player Erdal Erzincan. A new series will showcase the next generation of talent. The first Jazz Platform is a double bill featuring Southampton alumni Genevieve Namazzi and rising trombone star Christ-Stéphane Boizi. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Jesca Hoop performs an intimate concert drawing on her acclaimed six-album catalogue. Courtney Pine live Image: Derek Clark Jazz legend Courtney Pine returns with A Modern Day Jazz Story 1986–2026, celebrating four decades at the forefront of British jazz. This special live performance brings together key moments from his remarkable catalogue alongside previously unreleased work, promising deep grooves, soaring saxophone and the unmistakable energy of an artist still pushing jazz forward. Families will adore The Tale of the Loneliest Whale, a magical and interactive show that celebrates friendship, difference and the beauty of being yourself. Then Swing into Christmas with Down for the Count Orchestra. It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the 30-piece Down for the Count Swing Orchestra returns with its much-loved annual seasonal treat. Two portraits – one unfinished in underpainting stage Painting Technique: Glazing I often bore people with long conversations about my use of glazes, without realising they don’t know what I’m talking about. So I thought I’d write a post about this wonderful technique, and how it has transformed my art. It’s not complicated. Glazing is applying transparent layers of paint over another dried layer of opaque paint. One benefit is that highlighted areas retain their saturation and luminosity, and don’t turn chalky, as is the case if you mix colours with white. Shadow areas can achieve a depth of colour you can’t achieve with a simple layer of opaque paint. The disadvantage in using this technique is it relies on some forethought in preparing a suitable underpainting, and that underpainting has to be allowed to dry before applying the glazes.
